Green Scanner (Hackathon Champions)

In 2020, I competed in the Junction X Asia hackathon alongside a few of my university classmates. After 72 hours, we managed to emerge champions. We were also placed second through a judging by South Korea's National Council of Climate Change and Air Quality.

Ideation

We were tasked to come up with a solution to tackle increasing carbon emissions. We conducted a survey across people with different life stages, and realized that more than 50% of respondents do not engage in environmentally friendly habits, and a larger proportion of people are unaware of carbon emissions and the adverse effect of climate change.

Hence, we decided to develop an interaction mobile application that keeps track of consumer's carbon footprints through gamification. Through this, users can turn the amount of carbon footprint saved into reward points in exchange for lifestyle rewards. This in turn incentivises large corporations to develop products with minimal carbon emissions in mind.

Development

We decided to use Flutter for our application, as it allows for quick cross platform development. We leveraged on it's customisable widgets to create a visually appealing UI/UX and animation in order to attract consumers. For our backend, we used Azure services because of it's simplicity.

For this project, I worked mainly on it's frontend features, developing the home, scanning, rewards and history pages. Testing was done alongside development, making sure each and every component would be able to run smoothly.

Conclusion

We pitched the idea to the organizers alongside our business proposal, and i guess it's safe to say they liked it! Here is our pitching video, which includes the business side of things: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxUzI3PpCks , and this is the github link for this project: https://github.com/geraldspacelim/green_scanner_flutter

Overall, this was a very refreshing experience for me, as I had to work under a time crunch with a framework I was not super experienced in as we were not taught it in school. It taught me how to collaborate with others, as well as communicate with business partners effectively.
